Hong Kong Stock Exchange Plans to Extend Trading Hours
Hong Kong Exchange is consulting market participants about extending trading hours by 1.5 hours from current four hours to five and a half hours
HKEx says Hong Kong stock market’s opening time (10:00 am) is the latest in East Asia, and the total trading hours is the shortest of any global exchange. Under the plan trading will start at 9.30 am instead of 10 am and the two-hour-lunch trading break will be cut to an hour, in order to align the bourse’s opening hours more closely with mainland China’ stock exchanges.
In 2001 there was a proposal to extend trading hours but failed. However, HKEx is quite optimistic this time. The exchange will benefit from the rise in trading volume. Unamed source says the plan may be implemented as soon as first half 2011.
